The story of a poor black girl, Celie, as she grows up in rural Georgia, despised and abused by her own family. Her sister escapes to a new life as a missionary in Africa, leaving her behind. Over the years, Celie begins writing letters to God. She eventually becomes empowered and guided by a few strong women in her life.
